I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the Stargate Atlantis 6/01/07 episode...but can anyone direct me to a link explaining why the show has gone in the direction it did? I did not see this coming.

Mon, June 4, 2007 - 5:48 AMI think whoever plays a doctor in any of the shows have to be worried. First Dr. Frasier in SG1 and now Beckett! I thought he was a great character....he seemed more of the moral compass of the series.

Re: Stargate Atlantis-WHY??
Mon, June 4, 2007 - 8:21 AMYeah, I was also wondering why they did that. Did the actor leave the show or did they want him gone for some reason? I was sad to see the character go, too. My husband speculated that they offed him to make room for Samantha Carter to come over from Stargate, but that makes no sense to me. If they needed to get rid of a character for that, a science person like Zelinka would have been a better choice.
But hey, he might not be entirely gone. Daniel has come back from the dead a couple of times so if he can do it so can Beckett! -

Re: Stargate Atlantis-WHY??
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 12:57 PMHe was near the patients with the weird tumors, which came from the machine they didn't understand. Maybe it wasn't just explosive tumors that were supposed to affect the Wraith. Wouldn't the Ancients have made themselves and anyone with non-bug DNA immune? Maybe it was something else entirely. Maybe lots of little Beckets will be growing on the walls and in the airvents near where the explosion happened. Maybe they were blown into another dimension. Maybe Bobby will wake up to find it was all a dream.
I agree, he was a very likable character. Really disappointing.

I see that they are bringing in Jewel Staite from Firefly as the new doctor. Maybe they are trying to hook some Firefly fans to boost the shows ratings. I hope this doesn't preclude Beckett coming back, though. Yes, ascension does give him a convenient avenue to come back. That odd conversation he has with Rodney from the afterlife does imply that his consciousness is out there, unless Rodney was just dreaming!

Re: Stargate Atlantis-WHY??
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 8:42 AMI just watched the episode last night. It was a great episode, sweet, funny, and a little exciting until the end. It gave you a good look at the crew and raised a few tantalizing questions. About 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through I realised that it was essentially a Becket episode and then BOOM. I spent the whole episode admiring the acting and then I got broadsided by that explosion. In that aspect of it (the suddenness of the loss) the episode was a great echo of real life. I was so disappointed though! Being that this is sci fi and dieing doesn't mean that you have to stay dead I hope they bring him back. I vote for ascension. -

Re: Stargate Atlantis-WHY??
Sat, June 9, 2007 - 10:52 AMI think a follow up episode regarding the emotions of how everybody schemed excuses to avoid a day of fishing with Beckett. Guilt, sorrow, regret... I know if I did something like that then a friend dies, I would ask for some time off duty.
I dont know if ascenion would work in Beckett's case because there wasn't an Acended being to guide him away as it was for Daniel or Skaara (and the rest of the Abydonians when Anubis destroyed the village from orbit). There may have been some Ancient device to heal such devastating injuries somewhere in the undiscovered parts of the city; but also remember, Beckett's body was taken back to Earth. Perhaps the conversation Rodney had with Beckett is some precurser to a psychic connection in the same manner as Chriton had in the Farscape series.
